Predictive Maintenance for Precision Winding Machines

SSM Schärer Schweiter Mettler AG

Introduction:

SSM Schärer Schweiter Mettler AG (SSM) is one of the world’s leading suppliers of precision winding machines in the fields of dyeing, weaving, and sewing thread preparation and enjoys success in individual segments of yarn production. SSM is part of RIETER Groupe and comprises the companies SSM Schärer Schweiter Mettler AG in Wädenswil (ZH) as well as subsidiaries in Italy and China.

In general, SSM machines has already a high level of digitization. First projects to connect machines to the SSM-cloud and offer complementary digital services over subscription payments, are in development and test.

SSM sees an increased trend for predictive maintenance, a customer advantage as well as an advantage for SSM itself. Therefore, SSM is looking for a partner for an Innosuisse project to check and test options.

Call title: Predictive Maintenance for Precision Winding Machines
Challenge description and requested support

Goal of project is to sell predictive maintenance service to create value for the customer, e.g:

  • In comparison to a preventive maintenance approach, customer will be able to reduce costs over extended usage of components.
  •  Customer will have less costs from reactive maintenance and idle spindles. See graph attached.
  • Customer shall be able to order his spare parts just in time for replacement.

Project aim is to:

  • be able to predict which spare parts will fail when.
  • Be able to define parameters that influence mechanical parts on thread laying device
  • Be able to define parameters that influence electrical spare parts (motors, engine)
  • Be able to calculate the value that SSM’s own spare parts have versus the competition (“pirate” non-original spare parts).
  • Be able to clearly influence the longevity of the machine, if good quality spare parts are used
  • Possibly automize orders for key parts?
